So I was supposed to be letting everyone know about this last week, but the silly cold took me out of the game, so I'm doing it now, instead.

My latest book is available in paperback and eBook. Finally took the plunge into paperback formatting and have to say, although it is tougher than eBook publishing, KDP and CreateSpace do their very best to make it as smooth as possible. I wrote a whole post about it over here if anyone is interested: Paperback Here I Come! The Tribulations of Going From Kindle to Print.

Dead Before Dawn
The Vampire Curse
Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse

Max Statton's life will never be the same again.

While in Moscow for the premier of his new movie a terrifying encounter reveals some nightmares actually exist. Attacked by one of the city's resident vampires, Max is bitten and infected. Only a team of local vampire hunters prevent him being dragged into the violent underworld of the undead.

Fighting for his very existence, Max must resist the vampire curse with the help of Yulia, the hunter's doctor. But with his humanity slipping away, Max only has two choices: ask the hunters to end it, or risk becoming a monster.

When Yulia offers him a final, desperate, kill or cure option, Max must decide if he has the courage to take it. He wants his life back, and the idea of telling his friend and co-star, Gian Bossard, he's sort of in love with him, doesn't seem so frightening after vampires. However, Yulia's solution could just as easily send him to a worse hell than the one he's living.

It's finally time to go live! Yay!

The first chapter of my new novel

Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse
Chapter 1: Cat and Mouse

is now published and ready for reading.

Max Statton is in Moscow for the premier of his new movie when a terrifying encounter turns his life on its head. Attacked by one of the city's resident vampires, Max is bitten and infected. Only a team of local vampire hunters prevent him being dragged into the underworld of the undead.

Fighting for his very existence, Max must resist the vampire curse with the help of Yulia, the hunter's doctor. But with his humanity slipping away, Max only has two choices: ask the hunters to end it, or risk becoming a monster. His fame makes it dangerous to just kill him, but there may be no choice.

When Yulia offers him a kill or cure option, Max must decide if he has the courage to take it. He wants to go home, he wants to see his family and friends, but his life is poised on a knife edge.

The really good news is I'm serialising it on Wattpad so it's totally free! You'll need a Wattpad account, but you can set one up in seconds using your Facebook login, your Google login or an email and password combination. Wattpad also has apps so you can read straight from your phone or tablet - just go to your app store and search for Wattpad, it will pop up.

If you enjoy the story I really would appreciate it if you added it to your library on Wattpad (the little + button) and gave it a vote - it helps the story be seen on Wattpad so helps me build a readership. Many thanks if you do.

Also, if you follow me you will be notified as soon as new chapters go live every Tuesday and Friday.

Please LMK if you are on Wattpad so I can follow you back.

My new vampire novel
Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse
Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse
is ready to start posting :)
Happy Dance

I will be posting the first chapter on Wattpad tomorrow (Tue 19th Sept). I'm doing all the last minute things today like getting the announcement posts ready for social media and our newsletter. It's going to be fun posting it weekly to see how different it is to posting a whole book at once.

There are going to be two chapters per week: one on Tuesdays and one on Fridays.

Be interesting to see how well this Wattpad thing works.

Okay, well since I'm just about to post a new Kindred: The Embraced Fanfic, I thought I would do a fandom intro, for those who haven't seen it or don't remember it too well. It seems I'm all about vampires at the moment :)

Kindred: The Embraced - Fandom Intro

Kindred is a show about vampires that is loosely based on Vampire: The Masquerade by White Wolf. The vampires call themselves Kindred and to become a vampire a person is embraced, hence the name of the show.

Imzy & Vampires

So I may have mentioned that I started a comm on Imzy for all things vampire, including original fiction and novels: Mutli-Fandom Vampires.

Every Monday we have Monday Morning Musings - which basically means I ask a question and hope people will answer it :) This mornings is "Who is your favourite vampire?"

If you don't have an Imzy account, don't worry - it is very easy to get one. All you have to so is go to the comm link (Mutli-Fandom Vampires) and put in your email then click the "request an invite" button. This will launch an email to me and I'll send you an invite to join Imzy and the comm.

There's really quite a good community starting up over there and we can talk to each other as well as post pretty pics etc! They're also doing their very best to add features fandom really want.

I've just loaded a new post over on Imzy on the comm: Multi Fandom Vampires.

It's called The Changing Faces of Dracula and list a few of my favourites from down the years, as well as a few I'd rather not watch again :).

If you are over there and love all fictional vampires come join the comm - we'd love to have you.

Likewise, if you're on Imzy and have a personal blog, LMK what it is and I'll come join.

Stuff

I have been lax in the last couple of weeks, sorry - I've been watching too much of the Olympics. Wow, our little nation came second in the medal table - amazing :) It's inspiring to see so many people from all over the world coming together to celebrate the best in sport.

I'm also madly trying to finish a novel I plan to serialise on Wattpad. It's vampire romance and based on an RPF fanfic I wrote ages ago, but I've changed all the main characters and added in a good five chapters, where each chapter is between 2 and 3K words. I intend to publish chapters weekly once I have it done. For anyone who wants to follow me, my Wattpad is here: NatashaDuncanDrake. Let me know who you are and I'll follow you back :).
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
I did yesterday - I realised that I had never actually seen Hammer's Dracula all the way through. I've seen the end a hundred times and most of the other Hammer Dracula films, but not actually Dracula. I realised this when I saw a clip on Youtube and didn't recognise a couple of the actors as having been in the film - LOL.

Hammer Dracula - Christopher Lee

I rectified it of course - immediately :) I have now seen Hammer's Dracula with the wonderful Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. I actually had to go and look up all the Dracula films to see which ones I had seen and which ones I hadn't. Turns out I hadn't seen The Brides of Dracula either, but now I have :).

It's hard to believe I hadn't seen them - I was sure I had seen the whole set. That's what comes of clips being shown all over the place. I almost had to give back my vampire obsession credentials! So not on! ;)

Have you ever been completely sure you have seen a film, only to find out that, actually, you've seen one like it, or the sequel and not actually the one you'd thought you'd watched? Or am I the only one that silly? :D

Other stuff:

Had a pleasant weekend, but boy to I ache today. I had my personal trainer session on Saturday and I was silly enough to ask for a core only session. If I cough or sneeze it really hurts - LOL. It's not as bad as last time I asked for a core session though - so I know I'm getting better at these things. Steve really is a great PT - he knows when to push and when not to.

Rob did his first 10K run this weekend too. He managed it in just over 1hr5mins and he was running with our friend Claire and her knee went on the final hill and they had to slow down for mud and stuff, so he reckons they could have done it in under 1hr in perfect circumstances. I am most proud of him :).

Things I have posted elsewhere:

beren_writes: Hyde with "Gackt, don't make me have to come get you!" (Gackt/Hyde - come get)
So I thought this might interest a few of my follows here, so I'm reposting from my Tasha's Thinkings Blog.

Welcome to Fan Fridays 16 and another chance for me to share with you some of my geeky nature. Today is about a recent discovery of mine that I just have to share. :)

Vampire Prosecutor
Korean Drama with Fangs!

So I have recently begun to try out Asian drama as well as Asian films, which I have been a fan of for a long time, and I am so glad I started down this road. Some of them just fit me to a tee :). Vampire Prosecutor is a South Korean television show staring Yeon Jung-hoon as Min Tae-yeon a prosecutor who leads a team that solve the most bizarre murders.

Seven years ago Tae-yeon was investigating a series of murders and caught up with the perpetrator, only to nearly be killed and ultimately turned into a vampire. He is still trying to solve that crime and he uses his vampire powers to solve other cases. These powers all revolve around blood:
  • At a crime scene he can trace back where blood evidence came from and how the crime occurred.

  • If he drinks the blood of the victim he experiences their death and sees what they saw.

Of course this leads to questions about his investigation technique.

Yoo Jung-In and Min Tae-yeon
The only person in the know is detective Hwang Soon-bom (Lee Won-jong) who runs interference for Tae-yeon when necessary. The other two members of the team are Yoo Jung-in (Lee Young-ah) a rookie prosecutor and Choi Dong-man (Kim Joo-young) their intern. Trouble arises as Jung-in starts to question Tae-yeon's methods, even though they keep bringing in the bad guys.

From the first episode of this I was hooked - I love it. This is a police procedural, like CSI, but with a vampire as the lead investigator. The team solve murders and the crimes are whodunnits just like your average cop show, but with an extra edge that makes it for me.

The characters are great too.

Tae-yeon tries to be all aloof with most of his team, keeping himself emotionally unavailable because of his secret and yet they begin to get to him. He had to care about them.

Soon-bom is loud and a forthright detective with a side of funny. He sometimes plays the fool, but there is a brain working away in his head.

Yoo Jung-In and Hwang Soon-bom

I have to admit I found Jung-in a little annoying to begin with, but she has really grown on me, just as her character has grown. She's a good investigator and keeps Tae-yeon on his toes.

Dong-man is underpaid and often overworked and something of a dork, but also highly entertaining.

The vampire effects are beautiful and understated and, yes, I'm not going to lie, incredibly sexy. These are my kinds of vampires.

If I could get my hands on the DVDs of this I would, but unfortunately Amazon UK only seem to have season 1 and that is ridiculously expensive. If you're in the US you can see both on Amazon Video with a DramaFever Instant add on (and there is a 7 day free trial period if you feel like main-lineing it) and while s1 is also ridiculous on DVD, s2 is a reasonable price.

Do you have any Asian drama recommendations?

So I have been in a vampire mood lately because I've been trying to sell my book The Avebury Legacy and I got to thinking about all the different kinds of vampire we see in fiction, be it written or on the screen. I like all kinds of vampires so I decided to write about what I see as the main groups and some of vampires in fiction that fall into these groups.

My post is over at the Wittegen Press blog:

Vampire Archetypes and The Characters They Spawn

Oh and I forgot to add:

I've just had an awesome review for The Avebury Legacy at A Creative Mind, which is a great blog with great reviews. I recommend it thoroughly. She was also wonderful and posted it on Amazon where it translates as 5 star :).

The Avebury Legacy by Natasha Duncan-Drake

When you're a vampire hunter infected with vampirism your life expectancy is short. Nate's a hunter and Lexie's a witch and they have less than six months before Lexie's magic can no longer delay the symptoms and keep them at least partially human.

Firstly, in hopes of rounding up a few reviews I'm offering anyone who reviews The Avebury Legacy in a fair and honest manner a copy of The Beginning (Vampires: The New Age, Prequel #1) absolutely free.

There is a Google form on The Avebury Legacy's book listing to make it easy for people to point me at their review and give me an email addie to send the free book to. If you already left one and would like a copy of The Beginning, please pop over and fill in the form and I'll send you one asap.

I've also written a couple of blog posts to go with the book:
Nate Laven - An Introduction
This is an intro to Nate, my main protagonist and is posted at my Tasha's Thinkings blog.

Phone Home (Vampires: The New Age, Flash Fiction)
And there is also some flash fiction set between ch1 and ch2 of the book, but which doesn't require prior knowledge to read. This is posted over at the Wittegen Press blog.

Thanks for reading.

Title: Dracula Untold
Rating: 15
Cast:
Luke Evans ... Vlad
Sarah Gadon ... Mirena
Dominic Cooper ... Mehmed
Art Parkinson ... Ingeras
Charles Dance ... Master Vampire
Summary:
Vlad, as the prince of his people must maintain peace with the feared Turks, but when the Sultan demands 1000 boys for his army and Vlad's son, he can no longer pay the tribute. Instead he goes to the monster living in the mountains and makes a bargain to give him the strength to defeat his enemy.

I really enjoyed this film. It could have done with some more female characters who actually had lines, but it was still entertaining and had a good story line.

There are no surprises as far as how the plot goes because we all know this is about Vlad becoming Dracula so he has to make certain choices and go a certain way, but I really liked how they did it. It was exciting even though we all knew where it was heading. This is not a film with grey areas and the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad, in this case good guys are Vlad's people and bad guys are the Turks are bad. Charles Dance might be the monster in the mountains, but he's more of chaotic neutral as far as the plot goes.

One of the things I really enjoyed was how Vlad is the hero all the way through. It doesn't matter that he's a monster, he is still the hero and it is awesome. Luke Evans does a great job in the part. He's sexy and tormented and wild around the edges; just what you want of Dracula.

Then you have the rest of the cast. Sarah Gadon is vital as Mirena, Vlad's wife. Her passion for Vlad and her need to protect her son come through so clearly. She is strong and a force to be reckoned with without ever picking up a weapon. Dominic Cooper is delightfully nasty as Mehmed, ruthless in his demand for Vlad's people and son. He is a character designed to be hated and Cooper makes you want to stab him between the eyes the moment you first meet him. Then we had Ingeras, Vlad's son played by Art Parkinson who is brilliant. He is a loyal son and brave, but still a child - a great balance.

And, of course, we have Charles Dance as the Master Vampire. He is delightfully evil and yet the lesser of two when it comes to the Turks. The scene where he and Vlad meet properly for the first time is so beautifully filmed. I do hope they make the sequel the whole film points to, because I would love to see more of him.

The rest of the cast is like spot the actor and then you have to work out if you saw them in Midsomer Murders or Game of Thrones :). I exaggerate, but this is a cast you will recognise from all over the place and they stand up well.

The film is only 92 mins long and I think this is perfect. It has action and enough character building that it's satisfying and any longer and parts would have dragged. There are plot points I have not seen used before in Dracula and it was a refreshing take on his legend. This is by no means a perfect movie, but it is good. I hope they make a sequel because I think that will be even more interesting and I will definitely be adding this to my collection as soon as it turns up on Blu-ray.
beren_writes: Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter - says my kind of lincoln (ALVH - my kind of lincoln)
So I've decided to set myself a challenge so I post more. I looked around and thought, what can I do and my eyes alighted on my DVD shelves. I own a few vampire movies (this doesn't include the TV shows - they're on a different shelf) ...

I thought I might share some of the highs and lows of my collection. It's going to take me a while, but I intend to write a review for all of them. If I've reviewed a title properly before, I'll link to that or if they are really, really bad, they might only get one line and be posted along with a decent one, but I will get through them all ... eventually.

As each review goes up I'll link the film's DVD/blu-ray cover to the actual entry so this will end up a master list. When the film is reviewed I will also add a border to its image below so you can tell at a glance which ones have been reviewed and which haven't :). If you're wondering, there are 116 film covers below (if I gain any more in the meantime I'll add them to the bottom).

Do you have any suggestions for vampire movies I don't own yet?

Summary: Adam and Eve are vampires and they've been married for centuries. They are deeply in love even though half the time they live on different continents. When Eve realises Adam is depressed she returns to him in Detroit and trouble soon follows in the form of her little sister Ava.

I love this film and no, before anyone suggests it, not just because Tom Hiddleston spends a lot of it wandering around half naked. That is an added bonus, but totally not why I love the film.

Title: Fright Night 2: New Blood
Rating: 15
Cast:
Will Payne ... Charley Brewster
Jaime Murray ... Gerri Dandridge
Sean Power  ... Peter Vincent
Sacha Parkinson  ... Amy Peterson
Chris Waller  ... 'Evil' Ed Bates
Summary:
Charlie, his best friend Ed and his ex-girlfriend Amy are on an educational trip to Romania where they have lectures on history at the local university. One of their professors is the beautiful Gerri Dandridge. When Charlie finds out she's a vampire the police won't believe him, Amy won't believe him and Ed just thinks he's screwed, so, of course, things can only get worse.

The wiki page for this film says it's a straight to DVD sequel to the 2011 remake of Fright Night - it's a lie. This isn't a sequel, it's another remake and this is how the first one should have been done.

I am a huge Fright Night (1985) fan, I love it and Fright Night 2 (1988), so when they remade Fright Night in 2011 I ran to the cinema ... and was  hideously disappointed. However, Fright Night 2: New Blood is brilliant. This is the kind of vampire movie I love. It has sexy vampires, it has humour, it has an adorable lead, it has action, it has romance.

This is the type of vampire movie that made me fall in love with vampires in the first place.

It's full of British actors playing what I assumed were Americans because they were talking about dollars and such, but I may just not have been paying attention and just expecting Americans because of the original. I didn't realise they weren't American until I looked them up on IMDB :).

Personally I thought the cast was brilliant.

This film takes the premise from Fright Night (1985), but adds in parts of Fright Night 2 (1988) by gender swapping Gerry for Gerri. It recreates small parts of both films in its own way, but has an entirely new and original back story, which I loved. This is recognisably Fright Night (1985), but fresh and new and simply wonderful.

I do have to admit, there are a couple of bits that don't quite make sense, like the whole opening scene which appears to have nothing to do with the film except for illustrating what vampires can do and the fact they don't show up on cameras. However, most of it hold together beautifully.

The two things I really, really disliked about the 2011 remake of Fright Night were Ed and Gerry; I thought the casting and the way they were played were totally and completely wrong. In Fright Night 2: New Blood they have got it so, so, so right.
Jaime Murray is simply fantastic as Gerri. She is sexy, in control and plays with Charlie so beautifully. Never for a second did I believe she was vulnerable. She was the epitome of the vampire; immortal, powerful and so far above the human cattle pitched against her.

Then there was Chris Waller as Ed, the unashamed horror geek who is slightly left of normal. I loved him, he was just enough like the Ed from the original (who I thought was the best character in the original film), but with his own spin to make him brilliant.

Will Payne as Charlie and Sacha Parkinson as Amy are also great and they shine in the final scenes, as does Sean Power as Peter Vincent. I have to admit, David Tennant did do a better Peter in the 2011 remake, but Sean was still great. The part where he figures out Gerri really is a vampire has the most superb timing.

This film is so good that originally I bought the DVD, but I've now gone back and ordered the blu-ray because I want it in HD. I do have some more to say about it, but there will be spoilers so I shall put them at the bottom where you have to highlight to see them.

Highlight to read:
This film hits so many of my vampire buttons. It has the hero being turned into a vampire (like in Fright Night 2 (1988)), it has a sexy vampire playing with a human for fun, it has the hero sacrificing himself for the good of all. I so, so, so loved it. The only problem is now I want more and I suspect there will be no more :(.

As I am sure you have noticed me mention, I have a new book out this week. It is called Cat's Confidence and it is book 3 in The Chronicles of Charlie Waterman. In honour of the release I have written a little flashfic for this week's Drabble Cascade. It is a tag scene to the book, but has no spoilers, so it can be enjoyed by all.

Awkward Moment
by Natasha Duncan-Drake

Charlie opened the door from his bedroom and stepped out into his living room, where Alexander was waiting for him. They were still on their break after the last Task and they'd decided to take a trip to a world neither of them had visited before. Thanks to losing himself in the library all morning, Charlie was running late.

"Sorry," he apologised and then stopped, because he saw what Alexander was doing.

His friend had one of his many books in hand and was scanning through it. When Alexander looked up and lifted one perfectly shaped eyebrow, Charlie wasn't sure what to say.

"A stake through the heart would kill anything," Alexander said, "not just vampires."

"So would beheading," Charlie agreed, "and fire," at which point he realised, that possibly wasn't the most tactful thing to say.

Of course Alexander had to have picked up the book about evil vampires. The only vampire he knew couldn't have gone for one of the ones about dragons, because he wasn't that lucky.

"Now you know why everyone on Earth thinks vampires are fictional," he added with an awkward shrug; "none of the vampire lore actually makes sense."

Alexander stood up and placed the book back on the shelf without another comment and Charlie really hoped the book hadn't offended his friend. Books about evil white guys didn't offend him, but then half the universe didn't have the wrong idea about his race, so he wasn't sure he could judge.

"Shall we go?" Alexander asked and didn't sound overly bothered, but sometimes it was hard to tell.

"Yeah," Charlie agreed and plastered on a smile.

"That book did get one thing right," Alexander added as he lifted his arm to create a portal.

"Really?" Charlie asked, honestly surprised.

"Yes," Alexander said and paused in a way that wasn't overly dramatic at all, well not for a vampire anyway, "we are all devilishly handsome and good in bed."

The whole speech was delivered with a perfectly serious demeanour, so it took Charlie a moment to catch up.

"Oh you bastard," he said and laughed, "I was really worried there for a second."

Alexander merely gave him a superior smirk as the portal flared into life.
