I have just spent the morning re-doing my LinkedIn profile. Apparently lots of people use it these days so I decided to actually add some content.

I have so many profiles on so many places it's hard to keep up! :)

Didn't get the novel finished yesterday as I had hoped because I flaked out. I think it was the heat. Did get some flash fiction written though.

It's today's post over at my Tasha's Thinkings blog.

Since I have nothing sensible to say, have a pretty picture instead :)

So this weekend Soph and I are going to be at TLWLexicon, a literary festival in Faversham, Kent, along with lots of other lovely authors and creators. Check out the TLWLexicon website for all the details.

This is the festival's first year and there are going to be panels and presentations and dramatic readings and huge amounts of fun.

Soph and I are doing two panels on the main stage, one on Sat at 4pm and one on Sunday at 12 noon and we will be in the 'everyone' panel both mornings as well.

Saturday's panel is called '"Self-publishing" or "Independent Publishing"' where we will be nattering on about the percieved differences.

Sunday's panel is called "Creating worlds and building audiences" and is just what it says on the packet.

Basically we're going to try and tell everyone the things we have learned as publishers and authors in the shark pond that is the self publishing world today.

We also have goody bags to give away with bookmarks, keyrings, sweeties and other nice things in them, and all you have to do is take the flyer with all the money off codes as well to get it - so win/win :).

If you are anywhere near the south east of the UK this weekend this is going to be a lot of fun, so come see us and all the other lovely people involved. It's only £1 to get in and under 14s go free.

[livejournal.com profile] entropy12 the next chapter or the rest of your Fic: One to the Other, HarryPotter/Avatar, Harry/Draco, Jake/Neytiri

I'm sorry, I could not complete the chapter in the time (it's been a very hectic few days), but here are the first couple of scenes. Thank you for reminding me I hadn't finished it - I had totally forgotten. I shall make a bid to complete it soon.

Title: One to the Other ch2 (teaser)
Author: Beren
Fandom: Harry Potter/Avatar
Pairing: Harry/Draco, Jake/Neytiri
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: This story is based on characters and situations created and owned by JK Rowling, various publishers including but not limited to Bloomsbury Books, Scholastic Books and Raincoast Books, and Warner Bros., Inc as well as James Cameron et Al. Warnings: none
Summary: Jake knows he should be over Tommy's death, but ever since he became Na'vi he can't seem to shake the loss. Author's Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] heeroluva for help_haiti - so sorry, I totally forgot I had not yet completed it.

Chapter 2 New Reality (Incomplete) )
beren_writes: Coulson in shades - says Son of Cool (AV - Son of Cool)
Trick or Treat :)
Last year Soph and I created a book for All Hallows Read and this year we are continuing the tradition.

What is All Hallows Read I hear you ask? This is what their website says:
All Hallows’ Read is a Hallowe’en tradition. It’s simply that in the week of Hallowe’en, or on the night itself, you give someone a scary book.
It was started by Neil Gaimen and we think it is a wonderful idea. So Sophie and Tasha have each written a spooky short story and we have put them together in a book called In The Even of Death.

Last year we put the book on Amazon because we wanted as many people to see it as possible, but the restrictions of KDP Select (the only way to have a free book when we actually need it) were uncomfortable so this year we have put it on Smashwords and on our website for free download. The link below will take you to the main page for the book so you can choose where you would like to download it.

We very much hope you like the stories and would greatly appreciate it if you would tell your friends about the book. Many thanks.

NEW FREE SPOOKY BOOK FOR HALLOWEEN
2 Short Stories
by Sophie Duncan and Natasha Duncan-Drake

Two short stories of the spooky kind created for All Hallows Read 2013.

This book is available free until 7th November 2013 and can be downloaded at the Wittegen Site or at Smashwords.

After that the price will rise and the free downloads below will be removed.

The Visitor by Natasha Duncan-Drake
Alice is spending the night in a dreary little seaside guest house, which is hell, and the last thing she expects is a late night visitor, the significant word being 'late'.

Ruderbaker by Sophie Duncan
Ellie meets Jack and he tells her and her friends a story of the ghostly, horror kind and sometimes stories have consequences.

I distribute my books via Smashwords and I thought several of them must have been simply refused by Nook UK because they didn't show up when I searched for my name. It turns out they are there, they just don't show up in searches.

It mostly seems to be my adult titles, but there are a couple of others that are simply not there. I have no idea why, but the only way I found them was by translating the B&N url into the Nook UK format. We link to Nook UK from Wittegen Press when we can so that Nook users can easily find our books. For my reference and for anyone else having the same trouble I thought I'd document how to do it.

Here is a B&N url for my latest book Cat's Confidence (it's on both sites which is what made it easy to use).:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/cats-confidence-natasha-duncan-drake/1116968975?ean=2940045280310

here is the Nook UK URL:
http://uk.nook.com/ebooks/cats-confidence-by-natasha-duncan-drake/2940045280310

So to translate one to the other you have to do the following three things:

  • Replace www.barnesandnoble.com/w/ from the B&N URL with uk.nook.com/ebooks/
  • Add a by- before the author's name
  • remove the first number and ?ean= (e.g 1116968975?ean=) from the last part of the URL

That then gives you the correct URL on Nook UK for your ebook that is on Barnes and Noble. It doesn't seem to work with big name books because they have different ref numbers, but they'll show up in searches anyway.

As I am sure you have noticed me mention, I have a new book out this week. It is called Cat's Confidence and it is book 3 in The Chronicles of Charlie Waterman. In honour of the release I have written a little flashfic for this week's Drabble Cascade. It is a tag scene to the book, but has no spoilers, so it can be enjoyed by all.

Awkward Moment
by Natasha Duncan-Drake

Charlie opened the door from his bedroom and stepped out into his living room, where Alexander was waiting for him. They were still on their break after the last Task and they'd decided to take a trip to a world neither of them had visited before. Thanks to losing himself in the library all morning, Charlie was running late.

"Sorry," he apologised and then stopped, because he saw what Alexander was doing.

His friend had one of his many books in hand and was scanning through it. When Alexander looked up and lifted one perfectly shaped eyebrow, Charlie wasn't sure what to say.

"A stake through the heart would kill anything," Alexander said, "not just vampires."

"So would beheading," Charlie agreed, "and fire," at which point he realised, that possibly wasn't the most tactful thing to say.

Of course Alexander had to have picked up the book about evil vampires. The only vampire he knew couldn't have gone for one of the ones about dragons, because he wasn't that lucky.

"Now you know why everyone on Earth thinks vampires are fictional," he added with an awkward shrug; "none of the vampire lore actually makes sense."

Alexander stood up and placed the book back on the shelf without another comment and Charlie really hoped the book hadn't offended his friend. Books about evil white guys didn't offend him, but then half the universe didn't have the wrong idea about his race, so he wasn't sure he could judge.

"Shall we go?" Alexander asked and didn't sound overly bothered, but sometimes it was hard to tell.

"Yeah," Charlie agreed and plastered on a smile.

"That book did get one thing right," Alexander added as he lifted his arm to create a portal.

"Really?" Charlie asked, honestly surprised.

"Yes," Alexander said and paused in a way that wasn't overly dramatic at all, well not for a vampire anyway, "we are all devilishly handsome and good in bed."

The whole speech was delivered with a perfectly serious demeanour, so it took Charlie a moment to catch up.

"Oh you bastard," he said and laughed, "I was really worried there for a second."

Alexander merely gave him a superior smirk as the portal flared into life.

So I have cheerfully named this month 'Write like the deadline is tomorrow' month because I really need to get my head down and start typing.

I have three publications to finish this month, hopefully for staggered publication in June.

One is a novel which is 85% finished already. I just have the final touches to put to it before it goes into the editing process. Given that I don't write in a straight line, this means all the little bits I couldn't be arsed to write to begin with or the bits I just didn't know how to navigate. I actually love this bit. Just occasionally there are those wonderful moments where I've left a gap in the middle of a scene and all it actually takes is one sentence to make it perfect :).

They're rare, but I can hope for divine inspiration ;).

The other two are both novellas. One is 70% done, but the blasted thing keeps growing. I was aiming for just over 20K words, but it looks like it's going to be over 30K. At least my readers should be happy :).

The other isn't done at all. I know what it's about and have the first scene done, but that's it.

Hence, 'Write like the deadline is tomorrow'. I'm actually rather revved up, which is nice :D.

Also, have just discovered Chai tea - I love it. Hopefully it will help me get through all the writing.
beren_writes: There is always some madness in love, but there is also always some reason in madness. (HP - draco - madness/love)
There is only a question mark next to how many parts this will be because last time I posted without having completely finished a fic I cocked it up. I believe there will be two parts, since I'm halfway through the second now, but if it turns out to be too long there will be three, hence the question mark.

Chapter 1 Left Alive )
beren_writes: Adam Lambert with headphone apparently having an orgasm ;) (al - oh yeah!)
So the Giveaway Games is finally over and I'm knackered. During July I produced 101025 wds in 14 stories, two of which were double length.

What I have learned this month:
1) I can write a short story (up to 7.5K wds) in about four hours
2) I can write a novellete (7.5K - 17.5K wds) in one day
3) I can write a short novella (~20K wds) in two days
4) Sometimes I'd really rather not write at all, but I can make myself do it :P

I also now have formatting of ebooks down to a fine art ;).

It was quite a challenge, but also a lot of fun in places, but I'm glad it's over ;)

Now all Soph and I have to do is step back, then re-edit and reformat all the stories as anthologies. We're going to be adding forewords to them all, proper covers that reflect the genre and things like that.

For those who entered the competitions, Soph is sorting all that out at the moment.
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)

Today we have two shorts for you. One is the second half of mine from yesterday, the other is one of Sophs. They're both packaged in the same eBook, so you still only have to download one.

We know the site was down earlier (small snafu with the code), very sorry, it's all up and working now. It's to do with the fact we had originally planned for June, which has 30 days and then moved to July which has 31 and guess what we forgot to change - oops.
