Finally Found Some Wonderful Novel Writing Software I Like - yWriter - #TipsTuesdays 6

I have tried numerous novel writing assistance applications in the past and disliked most of them. This one I actually like and have already found very useful. Check out the link for details.

I have tried various things. My favourite was Roughdraft but it isn't compatible with modern systems and the author isn't updating it. I think, in any case, in a very linear fashion so I never need to move scenes around. I do need, quite desperately, to keep track of things like the spelling of names and locations, and I usually just open a separate 'notes' document and keep copious notes then open it every time I'm working. Then I just work in Word or OpenOffice and name my documents things like first draft, beta'd, with edits, etc. Another friend has just recced http://www.simpleapps.eu/simplemind/ and I am considering it even though it isn't free (it's cheap). It might keep track of things for me while I forge ahead through the main story arc.

Speaking of which, I leapt up and asked to be included on your blog thing and haven't had time to do anything about it. Please accept my apologies - real life has intervened and I am unlikely to have any time at all until late October. Let me know if the offer is still open or likely to be repeated at a later date. *grovels*

But in fab news, an online friend who teaches English and creative writing in US has just had the go-ahead to order a class set of my novel, make podcasts of it, and involve me in a Skype session with her students on the processes of writing and of self publishing. Whee!! (Will definitely need the mindmap app.)

I haven't heard of simplemind before - I've tried Freeplane, which is mind mapping software, but I don't seem to think in the right way :). I think I like yWriter because it is almost like the interface for a programming language and I get that. It will also highlight all your known character names in text and things, which I find really useful. And it tells me how many words I have added today so I can tell if I'm slacking at a glance ;)
