So I was supposed to be letting everyone know about this last week, but the silly cold took me out of the game, so I'm doing it now, instead.

My latest book is available in paperback and eBook. Finally took the plunge into paperback formatting and have to say, although it is tougher than eBook publishing, KDP and CreateSpace do their very best to make it as smooth as possible. I wrote a whole post about it over here if anyone is interested: Paperback Here I Come! The Tribulations of Going From Kindle to Print.

Dead Before Dawn
The Vampire Curse
Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse

Max Statton's life will never be the same again.

While in Moscow for the premier of his new movie a terrifying encounter reveals some nightmares actually exist. Attacked by one of the city's resident vampires, Max is bitten and infected. Only a team of local vampire hunters prevent him being dragged into the violent underworld of the undead.

Fighting for his very existence, Max must resist the vampire curse with the help of Yulia, the hunter's doctor. But with his humanity slipping away, Max only has two choices: ask the hunters to end it, or risk becoming a monster.

When Yulia offers him a final, desperate, kill or cure option, Max must decide if he has the courage to take it. He wants his life back, and the idea of telling his friend and co-star, Gian Bossard, he's sort of in love with him, doesn't seem so frightening after vampires. However, Yulia's solution could just as easily send him to a worse hell than the one he's living.

Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse

It's finally time to go live! Yay!

The first chapter of my new novel

Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse
Chapter 1: Cat and Mouse

is now published and ready for reading.

Max Statton is in Moscow for the premier of his new movie when a terrifying encounter turns his life on its head. Attacked by one of the city's resident vampires, Max is bitten and infected. Only a team of local vampire hunters prevent him being dragged into the underworld of the undead.

Fighting for his very existence, Max must resist the vampire curse with the help of Yulia, the hunter's doctor. But with his humanity slipping away, Max only has two choices: ask the hunters to end it, or risk becoming a monster. His fame makes it dangerous to just kill him, but there may be no choice.

When Yulia offers him a kill or cure option, Max must decide if he has the courage to take it. He wants to go home, he wants to see his family and friends, but his life is poised on a knife edge.

The really good news is I'm serialising it on Wattpad so it's totally free! You'll need a Wattpad account, but you can set one up in seconds using your Facebook login, your Google login or an email and password combination. Wattpad also has apps so you can read straight from your phone or tablet - just go to your app store and search for Wattpad, it will pop up.

If you enjoy the story I really would appreciate it if you added it to your library on Wattpad (the little + button) and gave it a vote - it helps the story be seen on Wattpad so helps me build a readership. Many thanks if you do.

Also, if you follow me you will be notified as soon as new chapters go live every Tuesday and Friday.

Please LMK if you are on Wattpad so I can follow you back.

The Machine

I have just visited 79 Facebook groups to see which ones are worth posting my book to on launch day (21st Feb) and this morning I was doing the same with Twitter.

Yesterday I submitted the book to at least 80 book sites, who may or may not list it, and I have another 13 or so to submit to actually on launch day.

Book launching is a pain in the bottom - not to mention that I have to write blog posts for here, my blog and the Wittegen blog at some point too. Writing the book was the easy part, I tell you, easy! :)

Thank you for listening to me whine.

I am seeking pre-release reviewers for my new book to post during the launch week which starts on 21st Feb 2016. When you boil it down the new book is gay romance with telepathic figure skaters, so if you like that sort of thing, this is the book for you :).

I can provide an ARC of the book in PDF, Kindle (mobi) or ePub.

There was an earlier version of the story published as part of the giveaway games anthologies, but this one has been re-polished and it has grown by a third, so it is a lot different to the original. If you think you've already read it, you haven't :).

This will be an Amazon only launch (have finally caved and am trying out a new system) so the reviews would need to go there, thank you.

You can drop a comment with an email where I can contact you or drop me a line at beren (at) dtwins (dot) co (dot) uk and I will get back to you.

Many thanks to anyone who is interested.

The Machine - Rise of the Gifted by Natasha Duncan-Drake
Title: The Machine (Rise of the Gifted)
Author: Natasha Duncan-Drake
Rating: PG13
Genre: Contemporary SciFi, Romance, Gay
Length: novella (22.5K)

Rafe Derouet used to be a world class, British figure skater competing against his arch rival, flamboyant American Louis Hayes. A catastrophic knee injury ended his career and now all he can do is look on from the sidelines, commentating where he used to be a star. He hates Louis and wants nothing more than to see his nemesis go down in a blaze of failure.

Then mysterious men in black with guns take over a press meet, trying to arrest Louis, awakening something dangerous in their target, and setting in motion events they cannot control. Most shocking of all, Rafe finds out Louis can literally read his mind.

Dragged into a murky world of government agents and x-files by one of those x-files, Rafe finds his world view completely changing. And, along the way, his hatred for Louis proves to be something else entirely.

Now Rafe just needs to survive so he can decide what to do about it.

So Google are planning to implement a strategy that down rates your website in their searches and marks it unsafe if it isn't HTTPS, i.e. uses SSL so it is secure when talking to your browser.

In some ways this is good, in many, many ways, very, very bad. You should hear what some of my network and security expert friends have to say about it. There are so many problems with this when it comes to legacy systems.

Now really the only thing I can think of that needs to be secure on WittegenPress.com is possibly the comments section, but thanks to Google I now have to change over anyway. Luckily a company called Let's Encrypt are giving out free SSL certificates and Dreamhost have signed up to their scheme so they will automatically put one on your domain if you ask them to, making it much easier than it used to be. We used to have to pay for one if we wanted it to work without showing messages about the SSL certificate being self-signed, which is why we've never done anything about it before.

Still, changing over is a royal pain. Getting the host to use HTTPS is easy - I just change the base URL of the WordPress site, but now I am having to trawl through the whole site checking for mixed content. For those not in the know that means plugins or images that are being served over HTTP because they were put in with full URLs.

Our book table plugin is already showing a bug where some of the content is blocked thanks to the fact they didn't think of this. So we are waiting for them to fix it. It will be in the next update thank heavens. Still means I have to go through every single book and edit it - so not what I wanted to be doing today.

Thank you for listening to me rant, this post has been brought to you by the letters HTTPS and the number billion (as in the number of links I have to change). :P

For anyone interested I used this post to help me switch over:

Seeking Pre-Release Reviewers for eBooks

If you are here for Writerly Wednesday, today's post is a guest interview with the lovely Dorothy Massey and may be found here.

So Sophie and I are currently looking for people who would be willing to be pre-release reviewers for Wittegen Press. Before you click on to another page, this involves FREE books :).

We are seeking individuals who would be willing to read and give honest reviews of advanced copies (ARCs) of our books prior to general release. If you would be interested please:
  1. Fill in this Google Form : http://goo.gl/forms/1bJ7cgU0Jp
  2. If you are accepted we will then add you to the Wittegen Press Reviewers mailing list.
Don't worry, people on the mailing list will NOT be expected to review all books. We totally understand that there are times when we all do not have time to drop everything to read a book or a particular book may not be within our genres of choice.

The system for reviewing will be as follows:
  1. An email will be sent to the Wittegen Press Reviewers list with details of the book to be reviewed.
  2. Those interested in reviewing it will respond by filling in a Google form for that book.
  3. We will select a group of reviewers from the pool.
  4. Those selected will be sent an ARC of the book in their format of choice with the proviso they will read it within a certain time, which will be stipulated with each book.
  5. If we have more reviewers than required, those not selected in that particular instance will be notified.
  6. Individuals will then give an honest review of the book at Amazon and any other places they frequent on the web.
Many thanks to all those who are interested.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to One and All

I wish you all the joy, blessing and peace of the season. As my dear Papa would say, may the joy of the shepherds and angels, the love of the holy family and the peace of the Christ child be with you this Christmas time. I very much hope you are happy and well however you keep the season (even if it is just to stare at the rest of us as if we're bonkers :)).

To my friends who I know are struggling with bad things, all my love. This time of happiness for others must be incredibly hard. I wish you survival and the hope that the coming New Year will bring you everything you deserve and life will be better.

I am just off to make Last Minute Christmas Chutney ready for Boxing Day lunch, then I have to make a galette from Mary Berry's recipe for those of us who don't like Christmas pud and after that I will be on to the veggies to make sure they are all prepared for tomorrow's feast. If that's not enough, it's also my dear daddy's birthday, so we will be going round there for dinner this evening.

I've been roped into singing in the choir for Midnight as well, which I am so looking forward to. I love singing carols and descants. They're down a few members this year because of various things so they asked if anyone would mind standing in. Can't wait :). Then on Christmas morning Daddy is taking the 10:30 service, yay! It doesn't feel like Christmas until Daddy has taken a service (CofE vicars never really retire, they just take services for other vicars now that they don't have their own parish ;)).

So I promised FREE eBooks didn't I :). Here is the public service announcement ;)

Genre: Paranormal

Assassin's Blood
by Natasha Duncan-Drake

Meet Kira Roltof, or rather Jasmin Welby at the moment because she’s undercover. Kira’s an assassin with a sense of humour that’s almost as dangerous as she is. When hunting down her targets it helps that she's a vampire/werewolf hybrid and has been at the killing game for over seventy years. Practice makes perfect and all that jazz.

Of course her combined species status could just as easily get her killed as help her out. If either the vampires or the werewolves figure out she’s both, she’ll never be safe again.

Her latest target is a Mafia big shot. Nothing she can’t handle easily, except she runs into a little snag of the vampire persuasion at the end of the job.

Assassin’s Blood is a short story full of paranormal intrigue and action with a little bit of romance to round it off.

Genre: Contemporary Fantasy

Curse of a Banshee - (The Darwell [Magical] Cleaning Services #1)
by Sophie Duncan

B, a djinn/banshee low fae, runs Darwell Cleaning Services, a business that specializes in tidying up magical crime scenes. She's managed her company with her friend and business partner, Jean, for over one hundred years without any complaints, or problems. She keeps her head down and offers a job to those whom higher fae look down on for their lack of personal magic.

B and her team are expecting an ordinary night of clean-up when they arrive at the aftermath of a spell battle in the middle of an English woodland. However, when a terrified djinn boy appears in the middle of their job, B finds the mix of her djinn and banshee instincts, which she normally keeps under strict control, beginning to rise. The boy is not alone, he is being chased by criminals intent on selling him to become a genie, the same gang who took B's father a century earlier.

B must struggle with her own unsettled powers and fight the slavers for the boy's freedom, risking her own life and those of her friends in the process.

Curse of a Banshee is fast-paced fantasy taking a fresh look at ancient powers in a contemporary British setting.

So I just got a 1 star review on Amazon for The Avebury Legacy from someone who gave the person I beat on Cover Wars a 5* review.

The review is one line and there is no verified purchase to go with it. People are welcome to their opinion, but I think this (and this is the whole review):

Not worth reading. Nothing but lies and negative horror.

seems to be nothing about the book. I'm not sure how there can be lies in a fiction book anyway - I mean, I made it up, it's all fictitious, but then I don't expect to walk down the road and meet a vampire and am not trying to tell people they will, so no lies.

Does anyone fancy helping me out and giving me some honest reviews in exchange for a free copy of the book. It's only 99c anyway until the 21st, but I would very much appreciate some reviewers and am happy to give you a copy of the book in exchange for an honest opinion. The other reviews are 4 and 5 * BTW in case you were wondering what other people thought of it, there just aren't that many of them.

The book is contemporary fantasy with some elements of paranormal and horror. Nasty vampires, a quest, magic etc.

The Avebury Legacy - book blurb

Love your vampires nasty and your fantasy with elements of paranormal horror? "The Avebury Legacy" is the contemporary novel for you.

Nate was hunting a vampire when he first bumped into Lexie, a witch infected by a vampire bite. When Lexie used blood magic to save him from certain death, she passed on the infection to Nate. For a time Lexie's magic has been able to keep them both partially human as they continue to protect ignorant humanity from the vampire threat, but that magic is now starting to fail.

There are legends that the ancient Avebury ritual designed to destroy Morigan of Leyland, the most powerful vampire ever known, may hold the key to the cure they need, but to perform it Nate and Lexie require the four relics from the original ritual. Enlisting the help of veteran hunter, Brian Hawker, who has his own reasons for finding the relics, they must search across continents before it is too late.

In their way are vampire nuns, a crystal cave, shape changers, a labyrinthine catacomb, mummified monks and even librarians. However, their greatest foe is Dahlia, undead sister of Morigan, who will stop at nothing to retrieve the relics for herself and to claim Morigan's power. If Dahlia reaches any of the relics before them, Nate and Lexie face a fate worse than death, losing their humanity to the blood lust.

Exciting contemporary paranormal fantasy. "Tomb Raider meets vampires" with fast paced action and engaging characters.

So the original covers for the current books in The Soul Reader Series were all created at different times over the course of publication. This means they were all slightly different. With a new book in the works I decided I wanted the covers to be more homogeneous. Hence a flurry of activity and producing three new covers. I've also recorded exactly how they were produces so future covers can be done in the same way - not something I ever thought to do in the beginning.

So I spent most of Friday and the weekend designing a cover for Soph's short story (which she hasn't finished yet, but is getting there). I'm really pleased with it.

Sorry, I can't show it to you because that's her privileged and she hasn't decided on a title yet so it's incomplete, but I'm very happy with the way it turned out. It's dramatic!

The more covers I make, I think, the better I am becoming and I keep looking back at the older ones and thinking I need to redo some of them. I love making the covers, which is why I do it and don't pay someone else (other than the fact that it's cheaper).

I use every resource and piece of advice I can find to improve. My latest find is this site: Creative Indie. It is truly awesome and I found it because I was trying to decide what font to use and Derek Murphy (the designer and owner of the site) has a post called 300+ Fool-Proof Fonts to use for your Book Cover Design (an epic list of best fonts per genre) and it's so, very, very useful.

I also have a new book called Digital Manga (picked it up in The Works in town, but have linked to their website) which has some very useful techniques that can be applied to all sorts of digital design as well as manga. I love The Works, they have all sorts of wonderful art books for such reasonable prices.

YouTube is also wonderful for techniques. So many wonderful artists out there ready to share their knowledge. I have learnt so many new things since starting this whole cover design stuff.

So I finished the cover for Assassin's Blood. I've been working on it for a while, but finally finished it yesterday after finishing the story it goes with.

In case you missed the last post about this one, it's a short story that will be free to the subscribers of the Wittegen Press Newsletter. My brief was Paranormal and Soph is doing one that is Contemporary Fantasy. Once Soph is finished with hers we will be releasing them together.

Kira is my protagonist and she is a vampire/werewolf hybrid and an assassin with a rather twisted sense of humour. In this short story she's after a Mafia big shot, but runs into a snag of the vampire persuasion.

She's a lot of fun to write so I suspect I shall use her again at some point.

Soph and I have used WordPress to rebuilt our website and so I thought I might put together the odd blog post about things I am discovering as I go. This is the first. The is a complete list of plugins and what steps we took to build the site over here (How We Built This Site (wittegenpress.com) With WordPress), but my other post will be more detailed.

For a very long time I thought WordPress was just a blogging platform because we used it once on a site we had running and that was all it was at the time. However, when Soph and I rebuilt our website (WittegenPress.com) we found out just how wrong we were.

Trick or Treat :)
Last year Soph and I created a book for All Hallows Read and this year we are continuing the tradition.

What is All Hallows Read I hear you ask? This is what their website says:
All Hallows’ Read is a Hallowe’en tradition. It’s simply that in the week of Hallowe’en, or on the night itself, you give someone a scary book.
It was started by Neil Gaimen and we think it is a wonderful idea. So Sophie and Tasha have each written a spooky short story and we have put them together in a book called In The Even of Death.

Last year we put the book on Amazon because we wanted as many people to see it as possible, but the restrictions of KDP Select (the only way to have a free book when we actually need it) were uncomfortable so this year we have put it on Smashwords and on our website for free download. The link below will take you to the main page for the book so you can choose where you would like to download it.

We very much hope you like the stories and would greatly appreciate it if you would tell your friends about the book. Many thanks.

NEW FREE SPOOKY BOOK FOR HALLOWEEN

by Sophie Duncan and Natasha Duncan-Drake

Two short stories of the spooky kind created for All Hallows Read 2013.

This book is available free until 7th November 2013 and can be downloaded at the Wittegen Site or at Smashwords.

After that the price will rise and the free downloads below will be removed.

The Visitor by Natasha Duncan-Drake
Alice is spending the night in a dreary little seaside guest house, which is hell, and the last thing she expects is a late night visitor, the significant word being 'late'.

Ruderbaker by Sophie Duncan
Ellie meets Jack and he tells her and her friends a story of the ghostly, horror kind and sometimes stories have consequences.

As I am sure you have noticed me mention, I have a new book out this week. It is called Cat's Confidence and it is book 3 in The Chronicles of Charlie Waterman. In honour of the release I have written a little flashfic for this week's Drabble Cascade. It is a tag scene to the book, but has no spoilers, so it can be enjoyed by all.

Awkward Moment
by Natasha Duncan-Drake

Charlie opened the door from his bedroom and stepped out into his living room, where Alexander was waiting for him. They were still on their break after the last Task and they'd decided to take a trip to a world neither of them had visited before. Thanks to losing himself in the library all morning, Charlie was running late.

"Sorry," he apologised and then stopped, because he saw what Alexander was doing.

His friend had one of his many books in hand and was scanning through it. When Alexander looked up and lifted one perfectly shaped eyebrow, Charlie wasn't sure what to say.

"A stake through the heart would kill anything," Alexander said, "not just vampires."

"So would beheading," Charlie agreed, "and fire," at which point he realised, that possibly wasn't the most tactful thing to say.

Of course Alexander had to have picked up the book about evil vampires. The only vampire he knew couldn't have gone for one of the ones about dragons, because he wasn't that lucky.

"Now you know why everyone on Earth thinks vampires are fictional," he added with an awkward shrug; "none of the vampire lore actually makes sense."

Alexander stood up and placed the book back on the shelf without another comment and Charlie really hoped the book hadn't offended his friend. Books about evil white guys didn't offend him, but then half the universe didn't have the wrong idea about his race, so he wasn't sure he could judge.

"Shall we go?" Alexander asked and didn't sound overly bothered, but sometimes it was hard to tell.

"Yeah," Charlie agreed and plastered on a smile.

"That book did get one thing right," Alexander added as he lifted his arm to create a portal.

"Really?" Charlie asked, honestly surprised.

"Yes," Alexander said and paused in a way that wasn't overly dramatic at all, well not for a vampire anyway, "we are all devilishly handsome and good in bed."

The whole speech was delivered with a perfectly serious demeanour, so it took Charlie a moment to catch up.

"Oh you bastard," he said and laughed, "I was really worried there for a second."

Alexander merely gave him a superior smirk as the portal flared into life.

It's launch day! Yay!
Cat's Confidence is out today and for one week until 8th Oct is is $2.99, after that it's going up to $3.29, so get in early for the better deal.

It's available on Amazon, Smashwords, Apple, B&N and Kobo at the moment and will be on other sites shortly (thank you Smashwords aggregate program).

All the buy links are here at the main book page.

Summary:
The Seer says that a Questor is always prepared for the Task for which they are chosen and Charlie has been a Questor long enough to know the Seer is always right. Still, it never occurred to him that being ready would mean specific training for a specific Task. Charlie, Kaelyn and Alexander are given six weeks to become a Dragon Warrior team: all they need to do is master magical telepathy, archery, flying and, the trickiest of all, how to put on a dragon-harness in under five minutes!

Once through the portal in the land of Snijela, they must pass as veterans, make friends with other dragons and figure out why they've actually been sent on their Task in the first place. Add in a volatile young queen, two feuding nations either on the verge of peace or all out war, as well as spies, sexism and an alarming acceleration in Charlie's premonitions, and nothing is ever going to be straightforward.
