Horror

Saw the oddest horror film the other day called The ABCs of Death - it's an anthology film where 26 different film makers used a letter of the alphabet and a word as their prompt and came up with 26 very different snippets. It makes some of them very esoteric in nature. I was underwhelmed by many of them. There is an argument that art is art, but in this case, some of the time, art is boring IMHO.
ABCs of Death

Cats

Ruby is our problem child, at the moment :). She has taken to leaping from the kitchen counter, on to the fridge and then onto the top of the kitchen cabinets. I think it started because she was curious, however, now it is the classic "Daddy notice me!". She only does it when Rob is home because she got stuck the first time and he helped her down. Now she wants him to help her down all the time.

We have started to ignore her when she does it so she gets the message that Rob is not at her beck and call 24/7 :).

Tennis

I had totally forgotten that Wimbledon started this week and I am very much looking forward to seeing Djokovic play since I missed him on Monday. Caught Federer because by the end of Monday I had realised :) Not so much looking forward to watching Roger play our chap today though - I think Willis' (world 772 :)) dream winning streak might be coming to an end when he comes up against the #3 seed. I hope very much he acquits himself well - he's been playing up a storm, but I suspect Federer will put him out.

Sleeping

I have been having a bad week as far as sleeping goes, bad two weeks actually. I think it a combination of things, but over all the sticky heat. However, last night I finally got a good night's sleep. Yay! My head it full of cotton wool this morning and I had to find my glasses so I could focus, but that's because my brain is refusing to wake up :).

Unfortunately, when I don't sleep it affects my productivity, so I haven't gotten as much done over the last couple of weeks as I would have liked. It's ironic that is was a short story idea going round and round and round in my head that kept me awake the night before last.

Hope you are all well.

Seen any good, or alternatively, really terrible horror movies lately? How about the tennis - who do you think will win Wimbledon this year?

Other Stuff :)

Managed to actually take a photo yesterday that wasn't completely terrible :) Ruby and Rob were communing at the table.

Ruby and Rob

I also, totally accidentally caught it on video too, by randomly pushing buttons  :) As you will hear from the audio on the clip, it really was totally by chance as I was actually trying to take a photo. :D

I'm honestly not as technically challenged as the video makes me sound - I just don't know my way around Rob's phone - especially when it was Ruby who turned it on by accidentally stepping on it :).

I was planning a short lie-in this morning because I didn't get much sleep the night before last and I was catching up. No such luck!

The cat alarm this morning was Ruby, who, because she was bored, decided to climb on the top of the kitchen cupboards. Anyone who hasseen my kitchen knows that's where my cake boxes are stacked. Yep, I went from asleep to wide awake in under a second thanks to an almighty crash.

Y'know, I love my cats, but just sometimes ... :)

Amber is still asleep in her bed on our bed - which also says a lot about cats I think.

Have some Amber with a mint tea bag in a sock just because it's cute :)

I watched a bit of The Running Man yesterday because I haven't seen it in ages.

The Running Man

An Arnie 80s classic - a bit cheesy, terrible dialogue from the man himself and full of action.

It's a distopian tale where America is a police state due to resource shortages (not that we actually see a lot of that) and the government uses TV to indoctrinate the masses. The Running Man is the #1 TV show where criminals go up against "Stalkers" in a gladiatorial type arena in a chance to win their freedom.

Ben Richards (Arnie) was a police officer, but he refused to massacre unarmed people in a food riot and was convicted for actually doing so, becoming known as The Butcher of Bakersfield. He ends up on Running Man, but turns out to be more of an opponent than the "Stalkers" have ever faced before as the local resistance try to show the people they have been lied to.

I really must add it to my to watch pile and watch the whole thing to properly appreciate the cheese :).

Do you have a cat alarm clock? :) Have you seen The Running Man? Which is your favourite Arnie 80s classic?

So this morning our cats had a real barny (chased each other all over the house etc). This is them now:

Never let it be said that cats are consistent creatures - they just like to mess around with our heads! :)
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
Yes, it's time for more kitty piccies :D.

While Amber was lounging in the sun in the garden Rob and I were playing with Afia in the old dining room (sorry for the state of the carpet - it's the main thoroughfare of the house). We also set up a radiator bed for her when she first arrived that she has never looked twice at until today. Below is the pictorial evidence of the adventure.
And I'm supposed to do what with that precisely?

Does it move?

Such a top predator!

It's there - I can see it...

Moarrrr

Mine now.

Don't move, you're surrounded!

I'm gonna eat you little bit of plastic...

Perfect view of the cat flap.

Can I reach the sideboard from here in a single bound?

Is that a spider?

beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
I so post things other than pictures of my cats, I promise, it's just with a new kitty in the house the camera is out a lot at the moment :)

Fi-fi loves having her tummy tickled :) There would have been more piccies, but Rob's camera ran out of charge.

Of course Amber would never stoop so low (or at least not when there is a camera around :)). She is always a princess!

beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
Well all is going well so far. Afia spent yesterday evening hiding under things, but then explored most of the house in the early hours and is now happily sitting on top of the kitchen units :). We've given her a bed up there until we have the large cat tree delivered so she has somewhere proper to sleep. She likes high up.

They are currently ignoring each other mostly - well Afia is ignoring Amber, Amber just hasn't looked up yet and can't figure out where the other cat has gone ::g::. Amber knows she's here somewhere, but doesn't seem overly bothered that she can't figure out where.

They also chose to eat each other's food this morning :)

On to the piccies!
Afia

Going to sleep on the unit

That Amber is loud isn't she!

Been up all night exploring, shall sleep now.

This bed, it is good.

Amber
Making sure I still belong to her

Paying close attention :D

Love me please!

What do you think you're doing?

So today we picked up a new kitty as a friend for Amber. Her name is Afia, or Fi-Fi for short, and she is lovely natured and beautiful and also an ex-breeding queen. She's much more laid back than Amber so we hope they will get along.

This is a piccie of her at her old home with a lovely lady called Karen.
Copyright Spottydreams.co.uk
We met her son today as well and all of Karen's other kitties and they are all gorgeous.

When we brought her in and opened the cat basket there was a little hissing, but Amber doesn't seem overly bothered, which is good. Fi-Fi is a little more timid, but then she is coming into another cat's territory.

Currently I am upstairs with Amber sitting behind me on my PC chair and Fi-Fi is downstairs, hopefully exploring with Rob keeping an eye on her.

She's a climber so we're going to buy a humongous cat tree to put in the corner of our kitchen, or else I foresee a kitty sitting on top of the units :).

Will post piccies of her (and hopefully Amber together :)) when she's through the hiding phase.

Sorry about the quality of the picture, but it's hard to take a photo of my own back.

The grey fluff is my cardigan and the black, bobbles and brown are my office chair. Amber now likes to jump up and sit between me and the back of my chair. So much for personal space :)

Here's an even blurrier side image for reference :)

So we have a new sofa and Amber really seems to like it, especially when we have a fire at the weekend. She likes to sit on the top at the back or down the end on her blanket. Rob took some piccies this weekend and here they are:

Since we have a new sofa, we thought is was only fair that Amber should have some new furniture as well :). Well, that and if she has something in the front room to play on and scratch she shouldn't attack the new sofa.

Here are some piccies of her exploring the three level cat tree with the hammock when Rob has just put it together in the kitchen. In the background of some of the piccies, to the left you can also see parts of a really tall scratching post that we bought this morning as well so she can have a good stretch. That will be headed upstairs so she will then have something in each room. If anyone is interested they all came from Pets At Home.

At the moment they are both in the old dining room with  her existing scratching post so she can get used to them. We also sprayed them with cat nip so she knows they are all hers :).

So sorry, I totally forgot to do this yesterday.

[livejournal.com profile] dracavia,: The trials and tribulations of crazy cat ownership.

I think all cats are a little crazy, or at least they do not think in anyway shape or form along the same lines that humans do :). Of course some cats are 'more challenging' than others.

For those who don't know, my husband and I have a five and a half year old F2 Savannah called Amber and we've had her since September. She's an ex-breeding queen and she was very nervous and skittish when we first got her because she wasn't used to us. This is her in her super model pose:

She's much friendlier and relaxed now, but she's what you might call eccentric :).

She sleeps in a cat bed on our bed every night, which is the first of her eccentricities. At first she just slept on our bed and the cat bed was in the room where we first kept her when she arrived as her safe place, however, we moved it when we discovered one of her interesting habits. She cleans her teeth on the side of her cat bed by chewing it. This can be very distracting in the middle of the night because it makes a huge row - the bed is covered foam. Not much of  problem you might think and it was fine until she mistook my husband's foot for the side of her cat bed when she was just laying on the duvet. She has very sharp little teeth and an executive decision was immediately taken to move the cat bed onto ours to prevent any more blood being shed :).

Mornings are also very interesting. Because I work from home she bonded with me first since I'm there most of the time. Rob gets up first because he has to travel to work and Amber, without fail, pointedly ignores him, even though he puts her food out first thing. She stays in bed until I get up.

Then, once I have been on the exercise bike and had my shower, we have to have our bonding time. This usually consists of me sitting on a chair in the kitchen or the floor in the old dining room and giving Amber a big love while she head-buts my legs and weaves all over the place purring very loudly. If she does not get this she meows, a lot, and boy is she loud. She also goes for the weaving around legs trick, which if I am headed anywhere vaguely fast means I am likely to fall over her, so bonding time saves me landing on my face :).

She talks a lot. When we come back to the house she talks. When anyone else enters the house, she talks. When she wants something, she talks. She even has a meow for 'I just took an enormous dump in my litter tray, please come and clean it'. I kid you not.

She's only allowed in the garden, not generally outside because Savannahs have the instinct to range widly and she's likely to get lost if she roams. So she has a cat flap. Whenever she goes out and then comes back in during the day she will very gently meow as she returns. I then call back and she bounds up the stairs to  my desk to make sure I am where I am supposed to be. Then she heads back to bed downstairs.

I'm pretty sure she has no idea where her tail is most of the time. She knocks things off with it all over the place and she is the clumsiest cat I have ever known. I thought Bijou (one of our previous cats) was bad, but Amber really doesn't seem to take into account her back end :).

Amber loves to play and her favourite toy is what I think is supposed to be a mouse, but it looks like a bear to me. It has a bell and used to be part of a cat teaser, but she chewed it off the string many moons ago. All her other toys she destroys, but this one she carries around and jumps on and throws around, but never chews. She puts it under things so she can leap over them and dive underneath and pounce on it. She hides it so she can find it again. She puts it on my boot, puts her front paws on my boot and scoots it across the carpet at speed. It's adorable. She loves that toy.

She also loves my boots. They are leather and when I leave them lying around she sits on them. Levi (our other previous cat) used to like shoes too, but he would explore them and then leave them, Amber likes to use them as a bed and, yes, she has chewed them. Luckily I have an every day pair and a good pair - she is only allowed near the every day pair and she seems to have given up on the chewing of them now.

Amber is one of those cats where everything has to be on her terms. If you pick her up, she gets down, but she is quite happy to bounce over the sofa while I am sitting on it. We haven't reached lap sitting heights yet, but I have high hopes. However, she has one weakness: cat treats :). If you give her cat treats she will let you do anything. That's how we gave her her spot on wormer and de-flea-er - we just put a small pile of cat treats on the floor and got her while she was eating them. She's offish with new people, but give them some cat treats and she's right there. It would be embarrassing how easy she is to bribe if she wasn't so lovely ;).

Amber is definitely the most eccentric cat we have had. Levi was so laid back he was mostly horizontal and Bijou was slightly nuts, but she was everything you'd expect from a cat whereas Amber is much harder work. However, I wouldn't change her for the world. We love her dearly and she is such a character and a great companion for me during the day. She keeps getting better and better with people and she is very loving, especially to me. Cynthia, the absolutely lovely lady that gave her to us put it like this, because Savannahs are part wild cat (Serval), dealing with the F1s and F2s as compared to a regular cat is like the difference between a pony and a racehorse.
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
Turns out Amber likes our fire. We lit it for the first time this weekend and she sprawled out in front of it. She also sat on the sofa with us for the first time :).

Amber has had her first foray into the garden :). We’re letting her out in little supervised bursts at the moment to make sure all the security measures work (we can’t let her roam due to the fact she is part serval and many savannahs try to range like their wild cousins and get lost).

We like to call the second to last photo the supermodel post :) and the tongue is out on the last one because she was eating grass.

The foray ended when one of the local yappy dogs went past on its walk. We heard her growl for the first time; I don’t think yappy dogs are to her liking :).

So Rob and I fancied watching some horror movies last night so we looked at what Sky OnDemand had to offer. We'd seen most of them, but there were two that looked possible, one of which being a new vampire offering called Vampire U. It had Gary Cole; we hoped it couldn't be too terrible.

Yeah, we lasted about fifteen mins into it I think. Oh my god, the jokes were just terrible and not funny. I literally could not bear to watch it.

Next we tried Playback and we didn't last much longer on that. Take about telegraphing what was going to happen as it went along. I am sure some people loved it because it wasn't badly made, just totally not my kind of film.

Anyway, I have Fright Night 2 - New Blood arriving today. It seems to be another remake of Fright Night because there is a Geri (they cross gendered the lead) a Charlie and Ed and an Amy. My reasoning is it can't be any worse than the other remake. I shall do a review of it once Rob and I have watched it.

Now some piccies of Amber at play and eating her own back foot because I thought it was cute ;). Sorry some of them are a little blurred - she moves very fast ::g::.

These are from Friday, but I thought I'd give you a little bit of a break from them :). Cynthia, the lovely lady who had Amber before us, came round on Sat for tea and cake and we had a lovely afternoon. Since then Amber had been very friendly and seems even more settled, which is great. She lets us stroke her while she is wandering around now and she still doesn't like people looming over her, but sit on the carpet and she finds it hard to resist strokes. I'm thinking we might even get to cuddles eventually :).

In this one you can see her length because she's not hunching at all.

Amber sitting in the window.

We got her two weeks today and she's settling really well. She even gave me a head butt on the arm yesterday - took her a while to build up to it while marking everything in the room, but then she came over to me :).
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)

Last night Amber had the run of the house all night for the first time, including the bedroom. There was no bed invasion while we were in it, but this morning she decided it was her new fav place. The only time she has left it is to eat :).
beren_writes: Coulson in shades - says Son of Cool (AV - Son of Cool)
So I promised better piccies of Amber and here she is :). She likes sitting in her bed and looking out of the window.

She’s also started exploring the rest of the house (well the parts where we have the doors open - don’t want to overwhelm her). She seems to like it in the old dining room because she can nip under the table if we come down the stairs. She also talks a lot :). It’s lovely.

Haven’t managed to get her to play yet, but she definitely likes the cat teaser because we left it out for her last night and this morning it was broken :).

beren_writes: Coulson in shades - says Son of Cool (AV - Son of Cool)
So this is Amber, our new kitty. Sorry, this isn't very high res - it's from the web cam we've set up so we can keep an eye on her without disturbing her all the time. There will be some actual camera piccies once she has settled more and is happier with us being around.

She's begun talking to us now, so we hope it won't be too long, but we don't want to stress her out.

[Edit - Here is another piccie a bit higher res]
beren_writes: Coulson in shades - says Son of Cool (AV - Son of Cool)
We picked up Amber yesterday and the poor baby is still nervous and not very sure of everything. She did, however, very much seem to enjoy the head scratch I gave her this morning :). She's happy to be petted when she's in her bed, but not outside it yet.

She's eating and moving around the utility room and seems to like her new bed, so all seems to be going well. She also very much likes the kitty treats ;).

We just bought her a scratching post as well, so she has something to exercise her claws.

I think with a little love and time she's going to settle down very nicely.

No piccies yet, but soon, promise :).
