I hit my 50K words today :) Defence, Pretence, Offence now stands at ~152500 words and the first 10 chapters are nearly ready for posting.

NaNoWriMo 2016 Winner

Soph has beta'd them twice (she's a lot tougher than she was on GTS :)) and she's making me write a new scene after making me rearrange all the first scenes (she said the first sex scene happened too soon - okay, it was scene 2, she was right - LOL), but hopefully they should be ready to go up soon.

Defence, Pretence, Offence

Then it's just a matter of filling in the few scenes that still need finishing, before putting them before Soph's strict eye :).

To everyone else still writing to get their NaNoWriMo finished - YOU CAN DO IT!
Best of luck, I know you've got this!

Is everyone doing okay at NaNo? I imagine my US friends have more important things to worry about today. Good luck with the election.

My NaNo is actually going really well, although it did grow a whole new subplot. I knew the beginning was missing something, one of the reasons I was having so much trouble with it. So I sat and thought about it and decided to go with the adage, if in doubt, ramp up the tension :). Seems to be working.

Defence, Pretence, Offence looks like it's going to be 56 chapters so far. This doesn't make it hugely longer than GTS (40 chapters) because I'm going for smaller chapters for this one so they fit more easily on Wattpad (it's a culture thing rather than a hard limit thing). Wattpad readers like smaller chunks and I've had to divide some of GTS's chapters to fit the format for them, hence making sure all of the chapters are about right in DPO straight away :).

However, the rate I'm going I think DPO will be about 30K longer than GTS in the end - especially with the new subplot. Parts that were just filling and one scene have turned into three or four and I'm going to have to add in even more to play the whole thing out. Hopefully it will be worth it. Of course I only have a vague idea on how to resolve the subplot, but I will figure it out - LOL.

How is everyone else doing with their writing, NaNo or otherwise? All going well?

NaNoWriMo

Guess what I'm writing for NaNo this year!

Yep, I'm going to finish Defence, Pretence, Offence if it kills me!

I am so sorry for those waiting for it, I have just been so busy since NaNo last year that I haven't had a chance to get back to this. Hence why I have chosen it this year. It's 100K already, so it shouldn't take another 50K to finish it, but NaNo is so good at making me focus as well as being able to do other things at the same time.

 NaNoWriMo Winner's Banner

I finished NaNoWriMo today after I hit 50K on my Harry Potter fanfic, Defence, Pretence, Offence. Yay!

Well, technically I hit 100K because I had 50K before I started, and I still have more to write, in fact a lot more, but I still won NaNoWriMo :).

I honestly have no idea how long it's going to be in the end. I have 46 chapters at the moment, but I'm not sure if it will grow any more of if some will be combined. Only five of those chapters are still complete outlines, with nothing to pad them out, so I'm doing quite well. I just have the really tricky bits to finish up - the stuff I have to do some serious research for and the sex scenes :).

NaNoWriMo
Woohoo - I am less the 3K away from 50K words and I should be able to write that tomorrow no problem (it's going to be a busy weekend so I want to finish before it).

Of course I then still have to finish the fic, which is looking about 3/4 done, but I know I can do that now. Yay!

I have so enjoyed this NaNoWriMo; it has rekindled my love of fanfiction. I thought maybe I'd lost it, even though I still love to read it, but I haven't, it's still there, it just hadn't been used in a while.

I've just reposted a new edit of Gold Tinted Spectacles to AO3 - it's just a tidy up of the previous version, but it needed it, so I took some time to do it. I will get round to posting the update here too, but I haven't decided quite how to do it yet. I think reposting might be easier, since then I can use the crosspost option rather than doing 40 chapters twice, but I'm not quite sure :).

I hope everyone else's NaNo has gone/is going well. Are you all nearing the finish line? I know you can do it.

NaNoWrimo
So we're over halfway through NaNoWriMo. I hope all your novels are going well.

I'm trying to get a little bit ahead at the moment because I know this weekend is going to be chaotic. I've nearly finished the end and the middle is well fleshed out which mostly leaves the beginning to deal with. I have the very beginning and a few scenes, but otherwise that's the part that is a skeleton. Makes it rather hard to start posting it without a beginning, so, of course, that's the last bit to really come to me :).

How are you all doing? Is your word count going well? How's the plot?
beren_writes: Manga portraits of Harry and Draco (Default)

I do hope everyone's NaNoWriMo is going well. As you can see I am on track, but I have had a couple of days where I didn't make my word count (mostly only by a hundred words or so). I did, however, take my own advice and made sure I made up the deficit the very next day.

The red day on Sat was caused by the fact that Rob and I have just mainlined The Blacklist s1 and started on s2. We did nothing all day on Sat after lunch except watch episodes, so I had to do a double word count yesterday afternoon. It was so worth it.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy writing Harry Potter fanfiction - it's so much fun. I keep having to go check my facts to make sure I am not making a heinous mistake, but since GTS goes AU after OOtP and it was written before we'd ever heard of the really complex stuff in HBP and tDH so I don't have to worry about that canon, since DPO is a direct sequel to that with its own fanon :). I only have to think about everything that came before it. I had also forgotten just how much information and meta there is out there for HP, even more so these days it seems :).

I'm having a blast, but the damn story keep growing more scenes. I already have the complete timeline worked out, but I keep realising that it needs a new scene here or there for the details and adding them in. Then one idea cross-pollinates with another and before I know it I have a whole chapter I didn't realise I was writing. It's awesome :).

(I just went through and checked - I have 127 scenes planned, 20 of them are finished (1st edit), 30 of them are mostly finished (draft) and the rest are all just outlines - I have a bit of writing to do :)).

How are your NaNo's going? Are you having fun?
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)

So as you can see I already missed my word count on one day, but do not fear, it was only by 100 words or so and only because Rob turned on the TV and the gymnastics happened to be on. I made up for it today and am on track :). Yay.

Today I'm beginning to feel back in the story, which is a great feeling. It's been so long.

Hope all my fellow NaNo writers are doing well.

I'm over here on the NaNo website as beren_writes.
beren_writes: Adam Lambert with headphone apparently having an orgasm ;) (al - oh yeah!)

So first we have this *points up*. There were times this month when I really didn't think I was going to finish. It was right down to the wire.

  1. I had a really nasty cold, which, I kid you not, turned me into a zombie for about a week. I barely managed to write a couple of thousand words.
  2. Last Thursday, just when I was trying to get back on track I fell over in the shower and bruised and jarred my left side which made sitting still and writing somewhat fun for 2 days.
  3. My parents-in-law rang up and asked if they could come for the weekend. Don't get me wrong, they're lovely, but that meant most of the weekend was spent with family rather than deep in novel land.

Hence by Friday evening I was pretty sure I wasn't going to reach 50K and I almost gave up, but then I decided to give it one last go. It's funny, my stats on the site make it look as if I wrote almost 20K yesterday, but it was actually just that I was so disappointed that I might not finish I stopped filling it in until I was almost there :).

I'm pretty sure half the stuff I wrote yesterday is crap and is coming straight back out again or being heavily reworked, but at least it's in the machine :).

Well done to everyone else who finished too.

The Study

Our study is very nearly finished. The only things left to do are the hearth in front of the fire, for which we have all the bits, Rob just needs to work his magic, and half the door frame which had to be filled so didn't get painted at the same time as the other half.

This is a panoramic view of the end wall and the right side. You can see how it lays out, but unfortunately Rob's phone couldn't get the whole walls in :). Click to see it bigger.

This is of the end wall so you can see the cupboard, which was the final part we put in. We have always had a cupboard on that wall, but it was old fashioned and too shallow to be of any use, so we have extended it outwards using the same system as the shelves (they have an amazing catalogue).

This is what it looks like in daylight and looking at the end and left wall.

This is standing in front of the bookcase looking back at the doorway. That stylish picture on the wall came from Range - was £12.99 ;).

And finally for the room, this is the view of the corner along from the door. As you can see we need to put something on the walls :) It's the exercise corner.

Of course it wasn't quite complete so we also bought a rug and a bean bag chair (which is remarkably comfortable :)). We just need to get some anti-slip for the rug because it tends to move, although we could not have found a better size if we had custom ordered it.

All that was left was something for me to be able to reach the top shelves and Rob found these on eBay :)

The steps are made of yew and the frame is made of pine and they were hand made in the east end of London 40 years ago. They have been living in a dry cellar ever since. As you can see Rob has cleaned the top step just to see what colour it would come out, but the rest still need doing. I have tried them out and they are awesome - just high enough, but not too high so that unstable me can fall off and do some damage :).

This has now become my favourite room in the house. Book! :)

So who else has finished NaNo? How do you store you books these days?
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
Sorry, I forgot to post NaNoWirmo Updates 1,2 and 3 here, but you can see them over at my Livejournal if you would like :).

As you can see from my graphic, my progress had been a little up and down. I am currently ~400wds behind thanks to my missed days (both the yellow ones were only about 200wrd days and red was none at all :)). However, I finally know who the murderer is! Yay!

For those who haven't seen my other updates, I was bemoaning the fact that I knew who all the players were in the novel, but I didn't know which one of them had committed the murder. For those who have seen nothing of me wittering on about NaNo at all, my novel is as follows:

Mirabel's Bad Day and Beyond (Working Title)

Miri, or Mirabel if you're her mother, is a very powerful witch. When she wakes up on an obnoxiously bright morning she knows it's going to be a bad day. First of all her familiar, Ran, has decided being a cat is no longer interesting enough and has taken to walking around as a naked young man. Not good for her equilibrium, not good at all. Then she bumps into a friend, Ed Hanson, she hasn't seen in five years and she starts feeling the witch's mating urge. Think hornier than Sid James in a Carry On film, only worse. Being a demisexual with few close friends, this is kind of new and confusing.
Oh and her next door neighbour has been murdered, which might be a problem.

The idea is growing as I write and changing a little bit, but the basic premise is still there :). The time line is different, but it's still a murder mystery and Miri is still a witch with something of a personal magical problem. I'm having a lot of fun with it as the universe evolves.

D.I.Y.

I helped lay underlay last night! I know, this might not be news for anyone else, but I am completely D.I.Y. incompetent and I actually managed to help Rob without messing anything up. In fact I actually came up with some sensible suggestions.

The flooring you can see in the picture isn't actually laid yet, it's just in place to make sure we didn't choose really badly and need to go and exchange all the packs we bought for something else :).

The underlay is actually thermal and you can see from the roll sitting to the top of the picture it looks quite space age when you can see the metal surface. We've laid 2/3rds of it, but we can't do the rest until we've put the floor down on the first part and can move the weights machine to where it will be in the room.
As you can see from this second picture, now we have taken out the old carpet and old lino that was on top of it, we actually have a rather nice old wooden floor. Unfortunately we learnt last time we uncovered one of the floors that they may look pretty, but they make for a very cold house.

The floors are open to the elements looking straight under the house and they have gaps between the boards. This means cold winds come straight in. Hence the thermal underlay and the laminate flooring to go on top :).
beren_writes: Coulson in shades - says Son of Cool (AV - Son of Cool)

Just had to play catch up again today. Yesterday was almost a complete loss, only had a chance to write 300 words.

Our new Wittegen Press site is based off of Wordpress and one of the plugins is playing silly buggers so I spent yesterday trying to fix it. Problem is I can't repeat the problem on the test site. *bangs head on table*

Anyway, today was all about writing this morning and I am back on track, so yay! And no, I still don't know who did it, but I have some ideas ::g::. I better decide soon!

This afternoon it's back to stripping the study and then painting it. We've been working on it since Wednesday and we have one more bookself to empty and take down, then we can paint :). One of the hardest parts was the weights machine - we had to dismantle it so we could move it and it was a right pain. At the moment the front room and the old dining room are stuffed with books and craft stuff and basically the contents of the study :)

P.S. This extension OneTab for Chrome is so useful. It takes all the tabs you have open and puts them in a web page list and if you click them opens the link in a new tab and takes it off the list. If you have two windows it gives you two lists on the same page. Awesome if you're like me and end up with dozens of tabs open, but don't want to lose them.
beren_writes: Coulson in shades - says Son of Cool (AV - Son of Cool)
Woohoo - I'm caught up with my word count and even slightly ahead. If I can keep up this pace Nov is going to be great :)

I still don't know who did it though - I can't decide who the bad guy is. I may actually have to sit down and have a think to try and *gasp* plan it. I want to make sure it's not one of those murder mysteries where the murderer comes out of left field and leaves people going 'but who the hell are they?'

My cast of characters is growing nicely though. I have five suspects already :D.
beren_writes: Coulson in shades - says Son of Cool (AV - Son of Cool)
I am so close to being caught up with NaNo. I'm ~500 wds short of what I should be at today at the moment.

I didn't have a chance to write anything on the 1st because it was Rob's little brother's 21st birthday, so we had to head up to Colchester to help him celebrate. Hence I started writing 1,667 wds short on the 2nd. I have almost caught up, but I've reached a point where I need to have a think.

The thing about writing from the seat of my pants is that sometimes I just have to sit back and cogitate to work out which is the best way to go :). I think I may go poke at the website for a while, make sure it's all up to date and let the idea percolate in my brain.

Then I need to write some more so I am up to date, then I can work on getting ahead because I think I'm going the Amsterdam some time this month, but don't know when :).

Of course it would help if I actually knew what the main plot was! I know it's a murder, I know what's going on with the protagonist and the supporting main cast, I just have no idea why my victim was bumped off or who's behind it ::g::.

beren_writes: Adam Lambert with headphone apparently having an orgasm ;) (al - oh yeah!)

NaNoWriMo is almost here!

This year I actually have a strong idea of what I'm writing before November 1st - so yay! I've decided to do something completely new that I think will make a good 50k book, rather than what I usually do, which is write 50k of a longer book.

My working title is:

Mirabel's Bad Day and Beyond

and this is my synopsis:
Miri, or Mirabel if you're her mother, is a very powerful witch. When she wakes up on an obnoxiously bright morning she knows it's going to be a bad day. First of all her familiar, Ran, has decided being a cat is no longer interesting enough and has taken to walking around as a naked young man. Not good for her equilibrium, not good at all. Then she bumps into a friend, Ted Hanson, she hasn't seen in five years and she starts feeling the witch's mating urge. Think hornier than Sid James in a Carry On film, only worse. Being a demisexual with few close friends, this is kind of new and confusing.
Oh and her next door neighbour has been murdered, which might be a problem.
I have ideas so far about Mirabel, her mother and a little bit about the murder, but not a lot else. The idea came to me while lying in bed the other day and I think it's a good one for just writing by the seat of my pants (which I often do anyway ;)) and should flow for NaNo.

The camaraderie of NaNo is always so much fun. Lots of authors all doing the same thing at the same time. If you would like to become writing buddies I'm beren_writes over there.

So, who else is doing NaNoWriMo this year? Do you know what you are writing yet? Do you make lots of preparations?

NanoWriMo

beren_writes: Hawkeye - says badass with a bow (AV - Badass with a bow)
So nano is going well so far. I have completed my word count for both days and have lots of ideas to keep going. At this point I am pacing myself because I don't want to burn out. The novel idea is still percolating in the back of my brain so I don't want to run out of what I know before the rest has had a chance to grow :).

Was nattering to Rob about it over breakfast this morning and he gave me a wonderful idea for the spaceship :).

Hope everything is going well for all my NanoWriMo friends too.

BTW if anyone wants a copy of my variable Nano spreadsheet it's here: Word Count Spreadsheet.

It does the same things as the Nano stats page, but allows you to have:
  • a variable number of days,
  • a variable word count
  • a total before start date (so if you have some scenes already written that are not part of your word count you don't have to try and remember to take that off every time you update your total).

Click to see a screen grab of the sheet )
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
I did it, I reached my word total for Nanowrimo. Of course the novel isn't actually finished yet, but I can sort that out over the next couple of weeks :). Woohoo!

Now I can go have some lunch.

Good luck to all those still typing away. You can do it.
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
I'm writing a blog post first today (I've just come home from doing the weekly shop) because I have to put my head down and play catch up with my Nano writing. I managed to get my daily word count written yesterday, but our kitty died on Saturday morning (thank you to everyone who commented on my last post about it), so that was a write off of a day. We gave him a good send off and had a mini-wake on Saturday afternoon and I didn't feel like writing again until yesterday evening.

Then there's tomorrow. I am very happy to be reading my 500 word ghost story at Den of Geek's Den of Eek! at The Phoenix in Cavendish Square, but I doubt I will get any writing done before hand. By tomorrow morning I am bound to be too nervous to concentrate on the next novel :). I haven't read my own work in front of people since school (and that was longer ago than I care to admit ;)).

So, that said, I best get to it :).

Wish me luck!
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
I have not been able to write anything for the past three days because I've been preparing for, or had the in-laws to stay. It was a fab weekend, but it put me way behind. However, I just poured out over 3.5K in a little over two hours to get back up to speed :).

The break actually seemed to help with the flow, surprisingly. Maybe my brain needed time to juggle some things around? Who knows.

If I can write the same again tomorrow I will be very happy and back ahead of the game again. Actually if I can write the same every day this week I will be most pleased. I still have one section where I don't actually know what to put in it, however. I know where it's set and the overall gist, but no idea what the details are. Once I do I think there are 10K words just waiting to happen :). I may cogitate on it this evening while Rob and I are clearing out our bedroom so it's ready for the new carpet coming Wednesday.

You never know, maybe I will find inspiration in the dust bunnies under the bed ;).

I hope all you other nanoers are doing well. *hugs*
beren_writes: Loki smiling with the words "Sweet and innocent ... honestly" (Avengers - Loki sweet and innocent)
You know I said I had the bad guys figured out yesterday; that may not have been completely true, but it is today. I know who the bad guy actually is now :). Yesterday I knew what they had done and why, today I know who too. I just had the most fun writing the big reveal! Scenes like that are always so exciting to put together.

Still haven't finished the big fight scene, but that's no shock.

Writing is becoming easier every day - I hope it keeps up. I hope all my fellow nanoers are also doing well. You can do it *waves pompoms*. Even if you are behind I bet you can catch up. Just break it down into little segments, even if you look at it as 100 words at a time. Be happy every time you tick off one little block. If I'm stuck I write a couple of paragraphs and then fill in my Excel spreadsheet to watch my total go up (I don't always put it in on the website because I don't want to help kill their servers :)).

BTW, talking of my spreadsheet, it basically mimics the nano web page, but it allows for having an initial word count, having variable days and a variable word count goal. It's a .xlsm file because it runs VBA. I find it very useful for all sorts of projects just to keep me motivated.

If you would like a copy it's available to download here.

P.S. Apologies if there are any bugs in it - this is the latest version where I added in the variable days and I've tested it as well as I can, but you can never be completely sure. I find the best way to use it is to take a copy, name it whatever the project is and then leave the original as it in case of irretrievable errors.

Please LMK if you find any bugs. Thanks.
