Wittegen Press (my company) has a new competwition to win Cat's Call and Cat's Creation, the two current books in The Chronicles of Charlie Waterman by me.

We're offering three eBook bundles of the two books as prizes over here at competwition.

What is a competwition, other than an obvious spelling mistake? Well it is a very nifty way to run a competition on Twitter. All you have to do is sign in with twitter, click one button and you're entered. The click automatically subscribes you to @wittegenpress, our company twitter, and tweets about the competition on your account.

If you win you will be contacted by us via twitter once the competition has closed on the 2nd April. Competwition is a great site and well worth checking out for lots of lovely prizes.

If you don't want to enter, but wouldn't mind tweeting about it, I would love you forever for using this message:

Wow, I was having weird dreams last night. Something to do with a doctors office I think and then going somewhere else and I'm pretty sure there was a chase of some kind. The details are murky now. However, Tom Hiddleston was in it, so I count it as a win :D.

I keep eyeing the Captain America Blu-ray on Amazon. I already caved and bought the Thor one. The problem with CA was I put it on my wishlist before Christmas and it disappeared off it, but I never got it. So I'm wondering if something went wrong, or if I have a relation out there I only see once a year who will suddenly produce it out of the blue (this has happened before - I have two copies of some DVDs to prove it :)). I may just go 'screw it' and buy it anyway next month, because my mummy is giving me an Amazon voucher for Easter - patience, thy name is not Tasha! ;)

For those who missed it yesterday, my new book Cat's Creation Cat's Creation by Natasha Duncan-Drake is out. It's the sequel to Cat's Call Cat's Call by Natasha Duncan-Drake and it's novel length (~68K), YA, contemporary fantasy. Lots of magic and adventure for all ages to enjoy.

My husband is entirely corrupted by "the slash". I mean I've known for a long time I had him at least partially corrupted, ever since he tried slashing Pooh and Piglet in his head, but I now have irrefutable proof.

He's doing the last read through of my new novel "Cat's Creation" for me (should be out next week) since he's very good at finding the bits that don't make sense unless you have all the canon in your head. He always forgets the details, so he's the perfect sounding board :).

Last night after he'd read a couple of chapters he wanted to know where the missing chapter was - the one where Charlie and Alexander had sex. He's slashing my characters in his head, my life's work is complete - LOL.

For those who haven't read "Cat's Call" and know nothing about Charlie and Alexander, Alexander does happen to be gay, but Charlie is a slightly geeky straight boy I just like putting in awkward situations :).

I've seen several people talking about whether putting a book free on Amazon is a good idea or not. I'm not going to go into the whole KDP Select thing because I very much don't like the exclusivity clause that is involved in it. However, I have had one title price matched to free, which for me has been brilliant.

I've analysed my numbers from December to January and having a free book (Forgotten Soul) on Amazon has doubled my sales.

I'm definitely still at the don't quit your day job stage, even though this is my day job and I can only do it because I have a wonderfully talented husband and a low mortgage :). However, it's an upturn when, ever since Amazon played with their system back in the middle of last year, my numbers have been pitiful.

However, for those considering putting titles free on Amazon, I think I should point out a couple of factors.

  1. Most of my new sales were for Forbidden Soul, the direct sequel to the free book.
  2. The few extra sales I saw on other books were for books of the same genre. It didn't touch my YA novel figures.

Hence I think it's probably a good idea to plan exactly how you make your titles free if you are going to do so. I suppose it makes sense that if someone has read a book of yours in a genre and liked it, they are more likely to go for the same genre again. It is also likely that fans of a certain genre go for that genre and not an alternative one.

It's actually given me a lot to think about, which is why I thought I'd share what I've seen. Of course this is only one month, I have no idea if I will see the same again this month, but I have already seen more sales in two days than sometimes in a whole week in Dec, so here's hoping.

I'm seriously considering writing a YA short story/novella just so I can put it up there for free and have a free book in my other market segment. (Only once I've published "Cat's Creation" the sequel to Cat's Call, though, promise :)).

I would be very happy to hear if anyone else has had similar or completely different results. I know that KDP select only lets you put your book up free for five days, where as mine are intended to be free for as long as the system will let me do it, so experiences may differ.

To those waiting for the sequel to Cat's Call, I just wanted to let you know that it is coming. It will be called Cat's Creation and I'm hoping to have it ready very soon. I was originally aiming for early Feb, but I want the book to be the best it can be, so I've delayed it a bit.

Thank you very much for your patience, so sorry for keeping you hanging.

For those who have no idea what Cat's Call is:
Cat's Call by Natasha Duncan-DrakeCharlie Waterman is eighteen and until he is assaulted by a cat figurine and wakes up with a tail, he is boringly normal.

Seven great Spirits guard the universal Balance against the forces of chaos and it is time for them to choose new Questors to wield their power and be their mortal advocates. Charlie is supposed to be the Questor of the Cat Spirit, but no one bothered to ask him if he wanted to be. Taken to Between to explore his new powers he meets his fellow Questors: dragon; wolf; horse; spider; hawk; dolphin. They all seem to know what they're doing, but, fighting to maintain control, Charlie's two years too old and accidentally turning into a cat while asleep, which is plain embarrassing.

Cat's Call is now listed for sale on Goodreads in ePub format. The list price is $2.99 (the same as Amazon.com), but Amazon.com is cheaper at the moment because they reduced it to $2.75. If you get on with Amazon, I really would prefer people to buy it there, but I understand that some people have issues with them, hence the additional listing.

The Book

Cat's Call by Natasha Duncan-DrakeTitle:
Author:Natasha Duncan-Drake
Description:Existence is a Balance. Multiple universes and myriads of worlds exist in their own time and space and through each of them threads magic. Seven great Spirits guard the Balance against the forces of evil and chaos. It is time for them to choose new Questors to wield their power and be their mortal advocates.

Charlie Waterman is eighteen and until he is assaulted by a cat figurine and wakes up with a tail, he is boringly normal. Apparently he is supposed to be the Questor of the Cat Spirit, but no one bothered to ask him if he wanted to be. It's not the kind of thing that comes up when you're taking your A Levels at a grammar school in Kent. When destiny catches up with him he's two years late and past some mysterious threshold. Eighteen isn't really old, unless you're dealing with magic for the first time.

On meeting Akari, the man who claims to be his mentor, he is introduced to Between, a magical realm that exists outside normal time and space. Here he is supposed to learn how to fulfill his destiny. Accompanying Akari to Between to explore his new powers, he meets his fellow Questors: dragon; wolf; horse; spider; hawk; dolphin. They all seem to know what they're doing, but, fighting to maintain control, Charlie's causing earthquakes and accidentally turning into a cat while asleep, which is plain embarrassing.

Five sixteen year olds, a young, antisocial vampire and Charlie stand between the Balance and chaos. Nothing on Earth could have prepared Charlie for his destiny and in choosing him, he is sure the Spirits have to be insane.
